Interactions of large-scale free-stream turbulence with turbulent boundary layers
The scale interactions occurring within a turbulent boundary layer are investigated in the presence of free-stream turbulence. The free-stream turbulence is generated by an active grid. The free stream is monitored by a single-component hot-wire probe while a second probe is roved across the height of the boundary layer at the same streamwise location. Large-scale structures occurring in the fr...
متن کاملTurbulent Wall Jets with and without an External Stream
The results are presented of experiments on wall jets in still air on flat and curved surfaces, and beneath an external stream in presence and absence of pressure gradient and initial boundary layer. It is found that the Reynolds shear stress is not zero at the velocity extrema, invalidating the simple assumptions of layer independence made by other workers: it is concluded that a satisfactory ...
متن کاملRough-wall turbulent boundary layers with constant skin friction
A semi-empirical model is presented that describes the development of a fully developed turbulent boundary layer in the presence of surface roughness with length scale ks that varies with streamwise distance x. Interest is centred on flows for which all terms of the von Kármán integral relation, including the ratio of outer velocity to friction velocity U+ ∞ ≡ U∞/uτ , are streamwise constant. F...

متن کاملInteraction layer between a turbulent boundary layer and free-stream turbulence
The interaction between a turbulent free-stream and a turbulent boundary layer is investigated through particle image velocimetry measurements. An ‘interaction layer’ located between 0.12 ≤ y/δ ≤ 0.19, at the end of the log layer, is identified whereby the kinetic energy in this layer describes the flow above it. Conditional averages about the interaction layer indicate that it is home to peaks...
